They feel they can’t compete with the salaries in places like the Middle East and worry that teachers consider their country poor or unsafe (or both!)? They fret, worry, and inadvertently shut out their dream teachers - because they’ve forgotten just who their dream teachers are. Sometimes, they’ve even forgotten what their school has to offer. It’s true, a teacher focused solely on their bank balance may not be interested in African schools, but there are plenty of other teachers out there with different priorities. From a love of adventure, to the desire to make a difference in a community, there is no shortage of reasons why teachers would choose Africa. It’s time African international schools pushed aside some of those worries, swung open the doors and embraced their identity. Don’t worry about the paychecks dragging some teachers to other countries, focus instead on the teachers who want to teach in Africa. 1. Your location is teacher-bait. Dangle those unique experiences where teachers can see them. One of the big mistakes schools make is ignoring the travel aspect of international teaching. With under a quarter of international teaching candidates expressing concern over their personal safety when making the move abroad, you can be sure they’re doing their homework on that front. If you’re living in an area that is going through political upheaval or faces other obstacles, you’re going to have to work a little harder than schools in other locations to build trust. It’s that teachers don’t know that schools in Africa are recruiting. Schools in other countries are flooding the internet with their positions and opportunities all year round, but there’s nowhere near as much information available online about teaching in Africa. What does this mean for you? It means you’ll need to start your recruitment earlier than you might be accustomed to. Our data suggests that international educators are starting their job searches earlier and earlier and taking the time to find the opportunity that’s right for them. For many students, this will be their first experience of formal exams, and a prime opportunity to practise for the real thing next summer. How can you as a private tutor help students prepare for their mocks? In the main, mock GCSEs and A-levels should be treated as any other major exam, so the usual tasks apply. Work together with your student to create a suitable exam revision plan - ideally covering the next 6-8 weeks - which allows them time to study and absorb the necessary information. The plan should also have an allowance built in for extra study where the student is slightly weaker or needs further tuition. Whilst it is almost impossible, given the exam timeline, to stop teaching new course components completely, the week or two weeks prior to the mocks should be given over purely to revision, to enable the student to consolidate their knowledge. Now is also the time to begin working on exam technique. Set your student some timed practise questions, similar to those seen in the exam. This will get students used to the style of the exam and help develop their ability to work under time pressure. Asking children to write down the things they’ve learnt in their own words is a good method to gauge their understanding and identify their problem areas. It also helps them understand better as they try to piece together their thoughts on the topic at hand. Similarly, there are many science apps that are available on various platforms such as Android and iOS that are extremely helpful in making science a fun and easy concept to learn for kids. Parents too can utilize these tools to help their children explore science. Instead of looking for science assignment help, they can look up these apps and help their children focus and learn better. Summary Technology today plays an important role in education and online tutors are exploring various avenues to employ technology to help children learn better. Devising experiments and providing hands on experience are some of the newer methods of learning and they have proven to be very successful as they help children learn things by doing it themselves and this has been the time tested way to learn most effectively.

If you missed any of our recent posts, take a minute to learn more about each one of the phenomenal teachers that we honored this month! ___________________________________________ Christina L. from Carrollton, TX Inspirational, professional and friendly are all words that have been used to describe Christina, who teaches piano voice lessons in the Dallas area. Christina has been teaching with us for just over a year and has worked with 24 students in that short amount of time!   She grew up studying music knows how to keep her students on track while also making their lessons productive and fun, which is why they love working with her! ___________________________________________ Mark H. from Osseo, MN Mark has been teaching music for over 20 years, and specializes in a variety of subjects including guitar, bass guitar, singing and acting.   He loves what he does and his passion and enthusiasm for his students and his music shines through in every conversation we have with him. In addition to teaching, he has done his fair share of performing and touring. He has even composed songs for many local bands and produced musical scores for local theatrical productions. ___________________________________________ Dorothea G. from Sherman Oaks, CA Dorothea has been teaching piano lessons with us for over a year. Her students love her because she is great at challenging them and encouraging them to keep setting goals.   In addition to teaching, Dorothea has experience composing and has even composed for movies! She is currently working with some of the other TakeLessons teachers in her area to create a TakeLessons recital down the road.
